Who is/was the unrequited love for?

Was.. like, 1988-1992-era was... friend of mine, very straight, though he was quite kind and let me down as easily as he could at the time.

Was strange though, I think he almost reconsidered a few years later when we met up again by chance and went for a drive to hang out and talk... Brass in Pocket came on his car radio and he started singing it to me all goofy-like, the way we were in highschool... Guess I'll never know, since I was WAY too shy to even think of broaching it again. He'd said no and I had to respect that. Was he telling me otherwise by doing that? I'll never know.
