BAD by U2 has been a majorly emotional song for me since 1984, but it's only actually made me cry a few times.. and I really wasn't expecting to start BAWLING when they played it in 2005.. I was on the damn rail and looking right up at Bono and trying to sing and all I could do was stand there looking like an idiot with these tears I COULD NOT STOP pouring down my face. Wasn't expecting that at all but I couldn't stop either.

She pretty much has control over what she wears within reason. Motherinlaw sent her home last summer with a pair of knee high pleather boots with 3" stack heels, WTFFFFF... I wasn't too happy about that, so those are "you can wear in the house, but not appropriate for going out in". That kind of thing. And when something isn't appropriate we explain to her why.

Is there a safe or easy way to bathe a cat? (preferably I'd like both!)

1) Clip their claws, just the tips, careful of the quick.

2) Pillowcase you don't care about.

3) Fill the sink with the warm water and shampoo/flea dip

4) Put cat in pillowcase with head exposed, gather the opening around their neck. Tie just tight enough so they can't easily get out of it.

5) Pillowcase with cat into sink. Work the soapy water through the pillowcase into their fur. If it's flea treatment, keep them in the soapy water for the full ten minutes or whatever. Make sure to get some of the soapy water on their head and under their neck.

6) Drain sink. Keep cat in pillowcase.

7) Rinse cat through the pillowcase, preferably with one of those sink sprayer attachments.

8) Have towel ready, let cat out of pillowcase and dry off with towel. Prepare for three hours of hateful stares and paw-shaking.


This is how we had to do it with my 25-lb Maine Coon. My other guys I just put in the sink and wash normally if they need it. I let em stand up from inside the sink against my shoulder, I get soaked but it's easier on them that way.

What do you think of parents that mindlessly show their kids shows like Dora the Explorer or Spongebob Squarepants or any other dumb kids' show that's just on TV?

We tried to find a balance in that; we don't have cable TV so kiddo's TV exposure was limited to PBS and whatever we got on vhs or dvd. You can't completely insulate a kid from pop culture, socially it'll slaughter them, but at the same time you stay involved, monitor, talk about what they're seeing and see where it's taking their mind... needless to say I'm not a fan of the TV-as-babysitter mindset at all, no.

Of late she's getting more into anime, so we're letting her watch Naruto - she went as Kakashi for Halloween. But even so we still talk about where it puts her thinking, keep the awareness going.

There you've hit on one of the major stresses in my life right now.
We just keep talking, basically. Anything that comes up.. we'll bring it up, talk to her about it, see what she's coming away with in her head, and address accordingly.
We don't have cable TV so she's at least not exposed to too much that way, but it is pervasive..
Communication, monitoring, more communication. We can't shield her from the reality of the world and how twisted it is but we can make her aware of it with a different point of view.

All we can really do is pray some of it sticks.

Did you have a favourite teacher in school?

Not til highschool... George Mitchell, who taught greenhouse management, and Myron Tupa, who taught graphic art. Those two probably hauled me through highschool without dropping out all on their own, along with the next one I'll tell you of.

There was one English teacher who -ever- got me and who I didn't fight like a mongoose with, and eventually they just let me keep re-taking her class for the required credits. She got married and I don't know her name anymore. -_-

She was the absolute epitome of Fierce Black Woman -- she was always exquisitely groomed and dressed, despite the non-glamorous job of "public high school english teacher"... she took absolutely no shit from ANYBODY, and damned good at her job. Quite literally, in 12 years of English classes, she was the ONLY one who ever figured out how to deal with me. And I had a 720 English on the SAT, won a bunch of (meaningless) writing awards throughout school, etc etc.. it wasn't for my lack of ability.

How did you and your husband meet?

Medieval fantasy LARP called NERO (New England Roleplaying Organization). Yeah one of those games where you chase each other through the woods all weekend and beat the hell out of one another with plumbing supplies aka boffer weapons.

It still exists, but under different ownership, and it was a lot cooler back then than the present organization is, lemme tell you.
